Pandora Assignment 3

Pandora Assignment #3

Question 1.

Started: 4/27/11 9:15 AM and Ended: 4/27/11 10:00 AM

Question 2.

Antonin Dvorak, Dmitri Shostakovich, Hector Belioz, Igor Stravinsky, Jean Sibelius, Joseph Haydn, Tchaikovsky. (Bolded names from composers list and classical periods talked about in class. Belioz and Tchaikovsky represent the Romantic period, while Haydn represents the Classical period and Igor Stravinsky the Modern period.)

Question 3.

Pelleas At Melisande, Suite for Orchestra or Piano, Melisande; Jean Sibelius
Song Without Words for Cello & Piano in D Major, Andante; Felix Mendelssohn
Octet for Wind Instruments, by Igor Stravinsky
Sonata For Cello & Piano No. 1 by Bohuslav Martinu
String Quartet No. 2 by Henryk Gorecki
Te Deum, for Tenor by Hector Belioz
String Quartet Opus 20, Joseph Haydn

Question 4.

Octet for Wind Instruments was a nice quick (allegro) paced piece that just focused mostly on woodwinds with some brass helping to soar the notes at times. It was the first time hearing this piece and was fun to listen to.

Sonata For Cello & Piano No. 1 by Bohuslav Martinu, is the first piece of Cello music I have heard that I didn’t like. Bohuslav was “a younger contemporary of Leos Janacek” (see reference #1). I didn’t hit thumbs down while it played because it is the first time I’ve heard something strongly featuring the Cello I didn’t like. At the end it was because I disliked the rhythm.

String Quartet Opus 20 by Haydn was a nice surprise. Normally I only get to hear some of his symphonies and haven’t had much exposure to his other works. This was nice and peaceful at an Andante (medium) pace and strings dominated the Timbre.

Question 5.

I hit thumbs down on a selection that named the album but had no idea which song was playing from the track list of that album and Pandora wasn’t helping me out in this case. The album was Enigma Variation for Orchestra by Edward Elgar. However it didn’t list which song was playing and the list was extensive enough I didn’t want to guess. Since the only piece by Elgar I recognize from hearing it is Pomp and Circumstance (associated with graduation music usually), I went ahead and skipped it.

I also hit thumbs down on Sonata For Cello & Piano No. 1 by Bohuslav Martinu after it played. Reason given above.

I hit thumbs up on Haydn’s String Quartet because it was so nice and relaxing and a good jumping off point from this paper into further study for my Art Appreciation final.

Question 6.

Two particular pieces surprised me. Sonata for Cello & Piano by Martinu; and String Qurtet No. 2 by Gorecki. The reason why is that I normally really like the string family and these two pieces got on my nerves and I didn’t like them at all.

Question 7.

I worked on paper here while listening and doing a little side-studying for my Art Appreciation final. NOT looking forward to that final. I am stressing over it big time.

Question 8.

Listening to this music this morning took some of the edge off of my stress as I studied and prepared to study more.

Question 9.

For this final Pandora assignment I chose composers I was comfortable with and knew. It surprised me by playing a lot of music again from the Modern era that I hadn’t heard before.

Additonal Final Assignment Questions:

Question 1.

The assignment was pretty much what I expected, though I did learn to love Pandora and will replace my normal Windows Media internet radio stations for background music while on the computer. Some great exposure to classical music that I’ve never heard before and for me this will act as a springboard into my next wave of classical music appreciation and collecting.

Question 2.

I learned from this experience that there is some really good Modern era classical music out there from composers I’ve never heard of before. Usually when it comes to the Modern era, I am fine with musical scores and video game scores but past that haven’t had any real exposure until this assignment.
